What Is THHN Wire?

THHN Wire is an insulated electrical conductor with a thermoplastic jacket and nylon coating. The acronym describes the wire's thermoplastic insulation, heat resistance, and nylon covering. Electricians commonly pull individual THHN conductors through conduit for branch circuits, feeders, and other building wiring. Copper and aluminum versions are available for different installation needs.

Key Takeaways About THHN Wire

  • A nylon coating protects the insulated conductor.
  • Individual conductors make routing through conduit practical.
  • THHN is not the same as a complete cable assembly.

How THHN Wire Works

Cut electrical wires, strippers, tape, and connectors lie scattered on a worn wooden work surface

THHN Wire carries electrical current through a metal conductor surrounded by insulation and a nylon coating. The conductor provides the path for electricity, while the insulation separates the energized metal from other conductors and nearby materials. The wire is commonly pulled through conduit, which protects and organizes the conductors along a wiring route.

Wire gauge, conductor material, circuit load, and installation conditions guide the selection of THHN. A rewiring project may place separate hot, neutral, and grounding conductors in the same raceway. Each conductor must match the circuit design and termination method. Labels on the wire identify its construction and help electricians verify that the selected product fits the planned installation.

From the Chris Miller Electric team

When we use THHN Wire during whole-house rewiring, we verify the conductor markings, insulation condition, and routing before making connections. We also check that the wire size, conductor function, and termination points match the circuit plan. That review helps us keep each raceway organized and traceable.

THHN Wire in Practice: A Real-World Example

During a whole-house rewiring project, THHN Wire may run through conduit from a panelboard to new lighting and receptacle circuits. Separate conductors can follow the same raceway while serving different circuit functions.
